What you feed your bird in very important for your birds health and well being. Every birds have their favourite food and special treats ( which are not all ways good for them).
Birds that are sold at Birdsville can be categorised by what they eat, into two groups, seed eater and nectar eaters.
Seed Eaters
Such as Finches, Canaries, Budgies, Parrot and Cockatoos.
The diet requirement for these birds are a combination of seed, pellets/crumble, fruit and vegetables. These birds should not be completely taken off seed as it promotes a natural foraging behavior.
Young birds should be feed:
- Seed – depending on the bird
- Pellets/crumble – Kaytee Exact, Vetafarm, Tropican
- Fruit and vegetable – morning and night
- Treat – Fruit and nut mix, Tropimix
Mature bird (6 to 12 month) should be feed:
- Seed – reduce sunflower seed for the parrots and cockatoos
- Pellets/crumble – Kaytee Exact, Vetafarm, Tropican
- Fruit and vegetable – morning and night
- Treats – Fruit and nut, Tropimix
- Soft food/Egg and Biscuit – for breeding birds
All birds should also be given fruit and vegetables, such as spinach, broccoli, beans, snow peas, peas, corn, apple, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, pears, rock melon, cucumber, strawberies, as well as millet every day.
When parrot, especially cockatoos are over 12 month of age, reduce the sunflower seeds. There are a number of mixes with little or no sunflower seed, such ‘Birdsville Cocky Mix” and “Birdsville Parrot mix” or make your own mix, just grab a team member a let us know what you want in it. It is important that they eat all their seed in their bowl before it is refilled and the vegetables are increased. Parrots and cockatoo should be feed pellets in conduction with their seed.

Nectar Eaters
Such as Lorikeets
The diet requirements for these birds are primarily nectar as well as fruit and vegetables and there are several different nectar replacement products available in a wet mix and a dry mix

These birds should also be given fruit and vegetables, such as apples, corn, spinach, rockmelon, sweet potato, peas and broccoli every day. Lories and lorikeets can be weaned on to nectar pellets when they are older then 6 months of age.
