Licensing Requirements

Keepers must also comply with the NSW Code of Practice for the Private Keeping of Reptiles, which sets out housing, welfare and record-keeping standards. Keeping a native reptile without the correct paperwork isn’t a minor technicality – NSW authorities do prosecute breaches. In one case handled under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, a Sydney man was fined $5,000 plus an additional $3,000 in legal costs after being caught with native blue-tongue and shingleback lizards he’d imported and kept without the required wildlife licence. The same laws apply equally to Thick-Tailed Geckos and other native species covered by the Native Animal Keeper Licence system, so it’s well worth having your licence sorted before you buy rather than risking a costly outcome later.
