What You Need to Know
Tarantulas are large, slow-moving arachnids covered in fine hairs, with an impressive size range of 8-15cm leg span depending on species. Females are especially long-lived, often reaching 10-20 years, while males live a much shorter 3-5 years – worth knowing if you’re choosing one for the long haul. They need an escape-proof enclosure sized to roughly 3-4 times their leg span, the right substrate depth for their species (terrestrial vs arboreal), and a simple diet of live insects. Why Keep a Tarantula?

Are Tarantulas Legal to Keep in NSW?
Native Australian tarantulas can be kept in NSW without a permit. Exotic (non-native) tarantula species, commonly kept overseas, are illegal to import into or keep in Australia, to help prevent invasive species and biosecurity risks. All tarantulas sold at Birdsville are native Australian species, so you can buy and keep them with complete peace of mind.
What Could Happen If You Own an Illegal Tarantula?
Keeping an illegally imported exotic tarantula is a biosecurity offence in Australia, similar to cases involving other illegally kept exotic animals. Past enforcement has included fines under the NSW Biosecurity Act (one case involving an illegally kept python resulted in a fine of around $5,000), along with potential seizure and euthanasia of the animal. Sticking to native, legally sourced tarantulas like ours avoids this risk entirely, while still giving you a genuinely fascinating pet.
