Looking for guinea pigs for sale in Sydney? Birdsville is Sydney’s small animal specialist at 684 Botany Road, Alexandria NSW 2015, servicing the Eastern Suburbs and Inner South Sydney. Our guinea pigs come from our own carefully managed breeding program, built on unrelated bloodlines for healthy, good natured, robust animals in a huge range of colours and patterns. We also have rehomed guinea pigs looking for a second chance from time to time.
What You Need to Know
Guinea pigs, also called cavies, are social herbivores that live around 5 to 7 years and grow to roughly 25 to 30 cm long and 0.75 to 1 kg. They should always live in pairs or small groups, in an enclosure that’s as big as you can fit, with a hide, a hay feeder, a drink bottle and chew toys. Fresh hay should make up most of the diet, with a small daily serve of quality pellets and fresh vegetables. Guinea pigs can’t make their own vitamin C, so it must come from their food every day. Our full guinea pig care guide [care guide link] covers the right hay and pellets, safe and unsafe vegetables, and spotting early signs of illness.

Why You Should Get a Guinea Pig
- Friendly and chatty: guinea pigs greet their owners with happy squeaks and whistles, especially when they hear the fridge open.
- Great with children: they rarely bite and are easy for kids to hold with supervision.
- Suit smaller homes: a pair needs far less space and cost than a cat or dog, and they’re quiet enough for apartments.
- No vaccinations needed: unlike rabbits, guinea pigs don’t need yearly vaccinations.
- Easy to tame: with gentle daily handling and a few treats, most become relaxed, affectionate pets within weeks.
- Boys or girls both make great pets: two males or two females raised together usually live happily side by side.
Why a Guinea Pig Might Not Be Right for You
- They need company: a single guinea pig gets lonely, so plan on at least two.
- Daily care: hay, water and fresh vegetables every day, and a regular cage clean. There’s no such thing as a low maintenance pet.
- Odour: an enclosure left too long between cleans gets smelly fast, and ammonia from urine can make them sick.
- Allergies: some people react to guinea pig dander or to hay dust.
- Teeth and nails: their teeth never stop growing, so they need plenty of hay and chew toys, plus a nail trim every few months.
- Heat sensitivity: guinea pigs struggle in hot weather and need a cool, shaded spot through a Sydney summer.
Our Guinea Pigs
To protect genetic diversity, each of our females is only ever bred with one unrelated male, and we regularly source new bloodlines. We never inbreed. Because of this, our guinea pigs often have a slightly longer snout, a lean, muscular build and more upright ears than heavily line bred animals. You’ll find short and long haired guinea pigs in many colours and patterns, and we stock show line guinea pigs from time to time.
Our baby guinea pigs are usually around 6 weeks old when they go home. Every guinea pig is wormed and treated with mite and mange spray before sale.
Rehoming Guinea Pigs
We also take in guinea pigs that need a new home, and these come up regularly, we are re homing pre loved guinea pigs weekly. You won’t change the world by rehoming a guinea pig, but you will change the world for that guinea pig.
Sexing and Refund Policy
Our guinea pigs are not DNA sexed. We’re very accurate at sexing them and happy to show you how we do it, but young guinea pigs can be tricky to sex, so it isn’t guaranteed. We can’t offer a refund, credit or exchange if a guinea pig turns out to be the opposite sex. If you plan to keep a male and female together, talk to your vet about desexing. Desexing the male is simpler and carries fewer complications than desexing the female.
Health Guarantee
All our animals come with a health guarantee.

Services for Guinea Pig Owners
We offer guinea pig nail clipping in-store 7 days a week, and our team will happily show you how to do a quick health check on your guinea pig for free, even if you didn’t buy it from us. Guinea pig boarding is available all year round through the Petsville Hotel (https://petsvillehotel.com).
Taking Your New Guinea Pigs Home
Bring your guinea pigs home in a secure, well ventilated carry cage, and go straight home. Keep them out of hot sun, and never leave them in a parked car, even for a few minutes, as guinea pigs overheat very quickly. If you don’t have a carrier, we sell them in-store.
Have the enclosure set up before you arrive, then give your guinea pigs a day or two to settle before handling them. Once they’re eating and drinking well, start with short, gentle handling sessions, always supporting the bottom with both hands. We worm and mite treat our guinea pigs before sale, and recommend repeating both about 10 days after you get them home.
Guinea Pigs for Sale: Frequently Asked Questions
Are guinea pigs always in stock at Birdsville?
Guinea pigs are regularly in stock at our Alexandria store, with availability depending on our breeding cycles and any rehomed guinea pigs we take in. Check our Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for current photos, or call us on (02) 9669 1766. Deposits are available if you’d like to reserve guinea pigs from an upcoming litter.
Can I keep just one guinea pig, or should I get two?
Get at least two. Guinea pigs are herd animals and become lonely, stressed and unwell when kept alone. Two females or two males raised together usually get along well. If you’d like a male and female together, talk to your vet about desexing first, as guinea pigs breed very quickly.
How old are your guinea pigs when they go home?
Our baby guinea pigs are usually around 6 weeks old when they go home, fully weaned and eating hay, pellets and vegetables on their own. Each one is wormed and treated for mites before sale. We recommend repeating both treatments about 10 days after you bring your guinea pigs home.
How long do guinea pigs live?
Guinea pigs usually live around 5 to 7 years, and some live longer with excellent care. That’s a real commitment, especially for a family pet bought for young children. A diet based on fresh hay, daily vitamin C, a clean enclosure and the company of another guinea pig all help them live a long, healthy life.
What size enclosure do guinea pigs need?
As big as you can fit. Guinea pigs need room to run, explore and get away from each other, and a pair needs more space than one. Look for a solid floor, a wire top that unclips easily for cleaning, and room for a hide, hay feeder and toys. Our team can help you choose in-store.
Do guinea pigs make good pets for kids?
Yes. Guinea pigs rarely bite, are sturdy enough for gentle handling and love to chat with their family. Children should always sit down when holding one and use two hands to support its bottom, as a fall can cause serious injury. An adult should oversee daily care like feeding and cleaning.
