Plenty of people cringe at the thought of a pet mouse, but we think they’re incredibly cute, and nobody will ever convince us otherwise. Our mice aren’t just bred for colour and temperament. We’ve brought in bloodlines from breeders around Australia to produce stronger, healthier mice that aren’t inbred.

What You Need to Know Before Buying a Pet Mouse

As a rough guide, mice need an enclosure of around 60cm wide, 30cm deep and 40cm high, ideally with several levels, a solid wheel, hides, tunnels and a chew or mineral block. Their diet should be mostly quality mouse pellets or a rat and mouse mix, such as our own Birdsville Blends Rat and Mouse, with small amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables. Give fresh water every day from a drink bottle. Handle your mouse gently and often, close to the ground, as mice are quick and can jump from your hands. Why You Should Get a Pet Mouse

  • Affectionate: with regular, gentle handling, mice bond quickly, and many come to love a gentle face rub once they’re settled.
  • Small and affordable: a mouse gives you a real little personality without the space or running costs of a cat, dog or even a rabbit.
  • Easy to care for: daily food and water, a weekly clean and some time out with you is all a mouse needs.
  • Fun to watch: mice are busy, curious climbers that love exploring tunnels, running on their wheel and building nests.

Why a Mouse Might Not Be Right for You

  • Short lifespan: mice usually live around 1.5 to 3 years, which can be hard on children when their pet passes away.
  • Night owls: mice are most active at night, so a cage in the bedroom of a light sleeper may not work.
  • Male mice fight: adult males usually can’t live together, so a male is best kept on his own, while females are happiest in pairs or small groups.
  • Odour: male mice in particular have a strong smell, and any mouse cage will smell if the bedding isn’t changed regularly.
  • Health problems: like all domestic mice, they can be prone to tumours and breathing problems. Our breeding program aims to reduce this, but it can’t rule it out.

Fancy Mouse Varieties We keep

Our fancy mice come in a wide range of colours and coat types. Some of the varieties we breed include:

  • Rex: a curly coat and even curly whiskers, for a fun, textured look.
  • Satin: a glossy, silky sheen, thanks to hollow hair shafts that catch the light.
  • Long-haired: a softer, fuller coat than the standard short-haired mouse.
  • Himalayan: also called Siamese or pointed, with a pale body and darker nose, ears, feet and tail.
  • Manx: a very short tail, or no tail at all, like the cat breed of the same name.
  • Self: one solid colour all over, such as black, white, chocolate, blue or champagne.
  • Agouti: the natural wild colouring, with each hair banded in different shades for a warm brown or grey look.
  • Dutch: a coloured patch over each ear and eye, coloured “shorts” and a white body.
  • Tan: a solid or agouti top with a bright tan or orange belly.

Sexing and Refund Policy

Our mice aren’t DNA sexed. We’re happy to give our opinion on a mouse’s sex, but it isn’t a guarantee, as young mice can be tricky to sex. No refund, credit or exchange is given if a mouse turns out not to be the sex you wanted.

Mice are regularly in stock at Birdsville in a range of colours, with availability depending on our breeding cycle. If you’re after a particular variety or a larger number, get in touch about special or bulk orders, and we can take a deposit to secure mice from an upcoming litter.

Taking Your New Mouse Home

Mice are small enough to slip through tiny gaps and can chew through cardboard, so take yours home in a small, secure, ventilated carrier and go straight home. Keep the car cool, as mice overheat quickly, and never leave your mouse in a parked car. Have the enclosure set up before you arrive, then pop your mouse in and give it a day or two to settle before you start handling. If you need a carrier, we have small animal carriers in-store.
