What You Need to Know Before Buying a Mini Lop
Your Mini Lop’s enclosure should let it hop at least three times in a row, sit up tall without its ears touching the roof and lie stretched out, and it needs a safe area to run every day. Around 70 to 80% of its diet should be hay, which must never run out, topped up with a small daily serve of pellets and fresh greens. Offer clean water every day in a bottle and a heavy bowl. Pick your rabbit up with one hand under its chest and the other supporting its bottom, never by the ears. Our Rabbit Care Guide ([Rabbit care guide link]) goes into more depth, including how to change foods safely and the early signs of dental problems.

Why Get a Mini Lop Rabbit?
- Gentle nature: Mini Lops are widely considered the most docile rabbit breed, which makes them a great first rabbit.
- Affectionate: they bond closely with the people they trust and often enjoy sitting with you for a pat.
- Great for indoor living: they litter train easily and settle well in a house or apartment.
- Sociable: Mini Lops enjoy company, whether that’s you, another rabbit or a calm household pet.
- That famous look: Mini Lops are born with upright ears that gradually soften and flop over as they grow, giving them their much-loved lop-eared look.
Why a Mini Lop Might Not Be Right for You
- A decade-long commitment: a Mini Lop can live 10 years, so plan for its care through holidays, moves and life changes.
- Delicate backs: even a calm rabbit can kick and fall if held badly, and a drop can injure its spine. Small children need an adult’s help and are safest patting a rabbit on the floor.
- Ear care: lop ears can trap wax and are more prone to ear infections, so check them each week.
- Everyday jobs: fresh hay, greens, water and a clean litter tray are needed every day, or the enclosure will start to smell.
- Chewers: rabbits chew cables, furniture and skirting boards, so rabbit-proof any room your Mini Lop roams in.
Mini Lop vs Netherland Dwarf: Which Should I Choose?
Mini Lops and Netherland Dwarfs eat the same food and need the same care. Where they differ is size, ears and personality.
- Mini Lop: soft floppy ears, a little bigger, and the most relaxed and beginner-friendly breed.
- Netherland Dwarf: tiny upright ears, the smallest breed, and more curious, alert and lively.
For the calmest, easiest rabbit to handle, choose a Mini Lop. If a busier rabbit with a bit more attitude appeals, see our Netherland Dwarf rabbits for sale ([Netherland Dwarf for sale link]).
What Your Mini Lop Needs at Home
Housing
Go for the largest enclosure your space allows. Indoors, a plastic base that’s easy to wipe clean with a wire top for airflow works well. Outdoor hutches need to shelter your rabbit from sun, rain and predators around the clock, and mosquito netting gives protection from myxomatosis. A rabbit or puppy playpen makes a safe run for daily exercise. Hutches and large enclosures are sold in-store only, as they’re too bulky to post, and our team is happy to help you pick one.
Food
- Fresh Australian-grown hay, such as oaten, ryegrass, meadow or timothy (https://petsville.com.au/collections/hay). Hay keeps digestion moving and wears the teeth down naturally. Peters Timothy Hay (https://petsville.com.au/products/peters-timothy-hay-1kg) is the leanest option for a rabbit that needs to lose weight.
- Quality pellets, no more than about 10% of the diet. We recommend Birdsville Blends Rabbit and Guinea Pig Pellets (https://petsville.com.au/products/birdsville-blends-rabbit-guinea-pig-pellets-4kg), Science Selective Junior Rabbit (https://petsville.com.au/products/ss-selective-junior-rabbit-2kg) for young rabbits up to 6 to 8 months, Science Selective Adult Rabbit (https://petsville.com.au/products/ss-selective-adult-rabbit-1-8kg) after that, or Vetafarm Rabbit Origins (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-furry-friends-rabbit-origins-1-5kg). Supermarket pellets often contain fillers, so we steer clear of them.
- Leafy greens and herbs, such as kale, spinach, bok choy, Asian greens, basil, coriander, mint and parsley.
- Low-sugar fruit in small amounts, such as blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. Carrot and apple are high in sugar, so keep them as an occasional treat.
- Lucerne, alfalfa and clover as an occasional treat only.
Any change to your rabbit’s diet should happen slowly, over two to three weeks, to avoid an upset stomach.
Never feed lettuce, avocado, onion, garlic, corn, beans, bread, pasta, cereal, nuts, chocolate, lollies or biscuits. Daffodils, lilies and tulips are toxic to rabbits too.
Setup Checklist
- Hay feeder, such as the Hay Wagon (https://petsville.com.au/products/pipsqueak-hay-wagon)
- Drink bottle and a heavy, low-sided food bowl (https://petsville.com.au/collections/small-animal-feeding-accessories)
- Wooden hide and tunnels (https://petsville.com.au/collections/tunnels-hides)
- 4 to 6 toys, swapped around regularly (https://petsville.com.au/collections/small-animal-toys)
- Litter tray with hemp, paper pellets or wood pellets as litter (https://petsville.com.au/collections/substrate-toileting)
- Bedding, such as straw for outdoor hutches, or hemp or paper bedding indoors
- Salt lick or mineral block
- Rabbit-safe hutch cleaner, such as F10 (https://petsville.com.au/products/f10-500ml-ready-to-use)
- Wormer and mite and mange spray (https://petsville.com.au/collections/small-animal-health)
- Chew-proof carrier (https://petsville.com.au/collections/small-animal-harness-carriers)
- Rabbit harness, if you’d like to take your Mini Lop outside
- Treats for training and bonding (https://petsville.com.au/collections/small-animal-treats)
Rabbit urine is acidic enough to burn the skin, so keep the enclosure clean using a rabbit-safe product. Many household cleaners are toxic to rabbits.
Settling In Your New Mini Lop
- The first couple of days: leave your rabbit to settle for one to two days, until it’s eating and drinking well, before you start picking it up.
- Litter training: Mini Lops are one of the easiest pets to litter train. Put the tray in the corner your rabbit chooses, fill it with a different material from the rest of the enclosure, and pop the hay feeder next to it, since rabbits like to munch while they toilet. Move any stray droppings into the tray so the smell leads your rabbit back.
- Grooming: brush once a week, and more often during a moult using a wire brush, so your rabbit doesn’t swallow loose fur. If you ever need to bath it, use a rabbit shampoo only.
- Harness training: Mini Lops can learn to wear a harness for supervised outdoor time. Always use a rabbit harness, never a collar.
- Worming: worm a new baby 10 days after it comes home, then every 3 months. Adult rabbits can be wormed straight away. The wormer goes in the drinking water.
- Parasites: use a mite and mange spray every 12 weeks, plus a monthly flea treatment if you also have cats or dogs.
- Vaccination: in Australia, rabbits can have the calicivirus (RHDV) vaccine from 10 weeks old, then a booster every year. There’s no vaccine for myxomatosis in Australia, so keep your rabbit indoors or protected by mosquito netting.
Sexing and Refund Policy
Our Mini Lops aren’t DNA sexed. Our team will always give you our best expert opinion on whether a rabbit is male or female, and we’ll gladly show you how it’s done, but young rabbits are hard to sex with certainty. We can’t offer a refund, credit or exchange if your rabbit turns out to be the other sex.
Health Guarantee
All our animals come with a health guarantee.
Are Mini Lop Rabbits Available at Birdsville?
Mini Lops are regularly in stock at Birdsville, with availability depending on the breeding season. If you’re after a particular colour, get in touch and we can take a deposit to hold one from the next available litter. We never sell a baby under 7 weeks old, as it may still be feeding from its mother.
Every now and then we also have adult rabbits looking for a second chance. Many are already litter trained and used to handling. Visit our Rabbit Rescue Sydney page ([Rabbit rescue link]) or ask our team in-store.
Package Deals and In-Store Help
Each item in our range is already keenly priced, and you’ll save even more when you buy your Mini Lop with its complete setup, plus we run regular rabbit setup specials. Tell us about your space and our team will put the whole kit together for you. Everything mentioned on this page, and plenty more besides, is available in-store at Birdsville, and our online rabbit range is at Petsville (https://petsville.com.au/collections/rabbits).
Taking Your New Mini Lop Home
A sturdy, ventilated carrier lined with some hay is the safest way to get your Mini Lop home. Drive straight there and keep the car cool, as rabbits handle heat badly, and never leave your rabbit in a parked car. Set the enclosure up before you arrive, so your rabbit can go straight into a quiet room and explore in peace. Chew-proof carriers are available in-store if you need one.
Mini Lop Rabbit Frequently Asked Questions
How big do Mini Lop rabbits get?
In Australia, Mini Lops usually grow to a maximum of about 1.6kg, although some pet Mini Lops end up a little heavier. They’re compact, solid little rabbits with thick fur and floppy ears. Their size suits indoor living, but they still need a roomy enclosure and a safe space to run around every day.
How long do Mini Lop rabbits live?
A well cared for Mini Lop usually lives around 8 to 10 years. Unlimited hay, a clean enclosure, daily exercise, worming every 3 months and a yearly calicivirus vaccination all help your rabbit stay healthy for longer. Before buying, think about who will care for your rabbit over the next decade.
Are Mini Lops good rabbits for families?
Yes. Mini Lops are among the calmest, most gentle rabbit breeds, which makes them a popular choice for families and first-time owners. Children should still be supervised, as any rabbit can be hurt if dropped. Younger children are best sitting on the floor and patting the rabbit, while an adult handles lifting and carrying.
Should I get one Mini Lop or two?
Mini Lops are sociable, and many are happiest living with another rabbit. Two desexed littermates, or a desexed male and female, usually make the best pair. A single Mini Lop can still be content if it gets plenty of daily time with you. Ask our team in-store about choosing a well-matched pair.
When do Mini Lop ears flop down?
Mini Lops are born with upright ears, which usually start to droop as the baby grows over its first few months. Some ears flop early, while others take longer or sit at an angle for a while. By adulthood most Mini Lops have the classic fully lopped ears the breed is loved for.
Are Mini Lop rabbits always in stock at Birdsville?
Mini Lops are regularly in stock at our Alexandria store, with availability depending on the breeding season. Check our Facebook, Instagram or TikTok for current babies, or call (02) 9669 1766. If you’re after a particular colour, we can take a deposit to secure a baby from the next available litter.
