Hooded siskin care is a lot like canary care: a quality canary seed mix with niger, plenty of greens, egg and biscuit, and a canary style cup nest for breeding. The hooded siskin, also known as the yellow siskin, black-hooded yellow siskin, or black-headed siskin by some Australian keepers, is a bright yellow and black South American finch, and males wear a striking black hood. They’re lively, peaceful birds that suit a canary or finch aviary. This guide covers how to care for hooded siskins, from diet and breeding to housing and health, with a full shopping list of the supplies we recommend, delivered Australia-wide by Petsville.

Hooded Siskin or Black-Headed Siskin?
Some Australian keepers call the hooded siskin a black-headed siskin, but the two names belong to different birds. The hooded siskin (Spinus magellanicus) is the South American bird on this page, and it’s listed in Australia as the hooded siskin, yellow siskin or black-hooded yellow siskin. The true black-headed siskin (Spinus notatus) is a separate species from Central America. If you’re unsure which bird you have, the scientific name will tell you.
Hooded Siskins in the Wild
Hooded siskins are found across much of South America, from Colombia and Venezuela south to Argentina. They live in open woodland, scrub, forest edges and highland grassland, often feeding in small flocks on seeding weeds and grasses.
Housing Hooded Siskins
Hooded siskins are active little birds that need a long cage or aviary with room to fly. Keep them in pairs, with perches of different thicknesses, a shallow bath, and separate dishes for seed, grit and water.
Seasonal tip: Hooded siskins are fairly hardy, but they still need shelter from wind, rain and draughts. In winter, keep outdoor aviaries partly covered against cold southerly winds. In summer, give them shade all day, a bath, and Vetafarm Spark Liquid (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-spark-liquid-50ml) in the water on very hot days.
Hooded Siskin Diet
Hooded siskins need a quality canary seed mix with niger, plenty of greens, egg and biscuit, grit, vitamins and fresh water every day.
Seed
Feed a good quality canary seed mix, such as Basic Canary Mix (https://petsville.com.au/products/avigrain-seed-canary-mix-2kg), plus niger seed, which should be available at all times. Niger is very hard to get in Australia at the moment, so we’re not selling it on its own, but we blend it into Birdsville Blends Finch & Canary (https://petsville.com.au/products/birdsville-blends-finch-canary-500g), our biggest selling finch blend. Birdsville Blends are bagged fresh on site with a high turnover, so the seed never sits on a shelf, and buying from the people who mix it means better value.
Be wary of many supermarket and chain store mixes. Siskins don’t do well on a low grade mix, because poor grains and filler seed affect the health and vitality of your birds. If you’re unsure about your seed, ask a bird specialist.
Millet Sprays
Fresh millet still on the stem. French white millet sprays are preferred. Buy them on Petsville (https://petsville.com.au/products/millet-sprays-mixed-100g).
Greens
Greens are important for hooded siskins. Supply seeding grasses, chickweed, thistle, clover, dandelion, endive, silverbeet and broccoli. Clover is a great supplement for your siskins’ diet. Only collect greens from areas that haven’t been sprayed, and rinse them before feeding.
Egg and Biscuit
An important protein supplement for hooded siskins, especially when breeding. Try Shep’s Egg & Biscuit (https://petsville.com.au/products/sheps-egg-biscuit-500g).
Live Food
Offer gentles (fly larvae), mealworms and fly pupae, especially when birds are breeding. Live food is available in-store at Birdsville, and Vetafarm Insecta-Pro (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-insecta-pro-450g) is an easy insect food to keep on hand.
Vitamins
Add a vitamin supplement such as Vetafarm Multivet (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-multivet-50ml) to the water. Vitamins coated on seed are lost when birds remove the husk.
Grit
Use a proper fine finch grit with charcoal, baked egg shell, crushed cuttlebone, shell and limestone, such as shell grit (https://petsville.com.au/products/shell-grit-5kg), in its own dish.
Breeding Hooded Siskins
Hooded siskins breed much like canaries. They nest in cup nests about 45 mm across, the same as canary nests, which are available in-store. Place the nests high in the cage or aviary.
Like canaries, siskins build with coconut fibre and soft bark, and they may add a few grass stems. Provide plenty of nesting material (https://petsville.com.au/collections/bird-subsrate). The hen does most of the nest building, then lays around 3 bluish white eggs and sits on them alone for about 13 days.
The chicks leave the nest at around 3 weeks old, and the parents keep feeding them for about another 3 weeks. During breeding, give extra egg and biscuit and live food. Vetafarm Breeding Aid (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-breeding-aid-100ml) on the seed and Calcivet (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-calcivet-50ml) in the water also help support healthy eggs and chicks.
Sexing Hooded Siskins
Hooded siskins are easy to sex as adults. The male has a black head and throat, which gives him his hooded look, while the female’s head and neck are grey. Young birds look like females until the males colour up.
Health and Parasite Control
Watch for fluffed up feathers, sitting still and inactive, a dirty vent, or a thin chest where the keel bone sticks out. A sick bird can go downhill within hours. Move it to a small, warm cage straight away, add Spark Liquid to its water, and see an avian vet. For more on finch health, see our Finch Care page [Finch Care page link].
Worm your siskins every 3 months if they live outdoors, or every 6 months indoors, using Vetafarm Wormout Gel (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-wormout-gel-50ml). Spray birds, nests and the aviary with Avitrol Mite & Lice Spray (https://petsville.com.au/products/fidos-avitrol-bird-mite-and-lice-spray-125ml) every 3 months, avoiding the eyes. Keep new birds separate for 4 to 6 weeks before introducing them, and give them Spark Liquid in their water for the first few days after a move.
Cleaning
Daily: fresh water and seed in clean dishes, blow husks off the seed, and remove old greens and egg food.
Weekly: clean the cage or aviary thoroughly.
Monthly: disinfect with Vetafarm Avicare (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-avicare-rtu-500ml), clean or replace branches, and clean out nests after the young have left.
Compatibility with Other Birds
Hooded siskins are generally peaceful and mix well with canaries and other gentle finches of a similar size. Males can squabble with each other at breeding time, so give each pair space and its own nest sites. Siskins can also crossbreed with canaries, so plan your aviary carefully if you don’t want hybrids. For more ideas, see our Mixing Finches page [Mixing Finches page link].
Hooded Siskin Frequently Asked Questions
Is a hooded siskin the same as a black-headed siskin?
No, though some Australian keepers use the names for the same bird. The hooded siskin (Spinus magellanicus) is from South America and is also called the yellow siskin or black-hooded yellow siskin. The true black-headed siskin (Spinus notatus) is a different species from Central America. The scientific name tells you which bird you have.
What do hooded siskins eat?
A quality canary seed mix plus niger seed, which Birdsville Blends Finch & Canary already contains, along with plenty of greens, millet sprays, egg and biscuit, and live food when breeding. Siskins also need fine grit, a calcium source, vitamins in the water and fresh water every day.
How do you tell a male hooded siskin from a female?
Males have a black head and throat, which gives them their hooded look, while females have a grey head and neck. Young birds look like females until the males colour up, so it’s best to choose adult birds if you want a guaranteed pair.
Are hooded siskins easy to breed?
They breed well, in a similar way to canaries. Give them a 45 mm canary cup nest placed high, plus coconut fibre and soft bark. The hen builds the nest and sits on around 3 eggs for about 13 days. Feed extra egg and biscuit and live food throughout.
Can hooded siskins live with other birds?
Hooded siskins are generally peaceful and mix well with canaries and other gentle finches of a similar size. Males can squabble with each other at breeding time, so give each pair space and nest sites. They can also crossbreed with canaries, so plan aviary mixes carefully.
Do hooded siskins need heat?
Hooded siskins are fairly hardy, as many come from cooler highland areas, but they still need shelter from wind, rain and draughts. Keep outdoor aviaries partly covered in winter, and give them shade and a bath in summer. Bring sick birds somewhere warm straight away.
