Prepared by the Birdsville team, who have mixed and sold bird seed in Alexandria since 1985.
The best seed for canaries is a fresh canary seed mix built mostly on plain canary seed, with smaller amounts of oats, millets, rape, linseed and niger for variety and healthy oils. Birdsville has been mixing seed for Sydney bird keepers for over 40 years. This guide explains what to look for in a canary mix, how much to feed and what else belongs in your canary’s bowl. Every seed mentioned here is sold at our Alexandria store.
Canary Seed Key Takeaways
The best seed for canaries is a mix of about 70% plain canary seed, topped up with oats, millets and small oily seeds such as rape, linseed and niger.
An adult canary eats about 1 to 2 teaspoons of seed a day, and empty husks should be blown off the bowl daily.
Canaries need fresh greens and vegetables every day or two, because a seed-only diet lacks several vitamins and minerals.
Canaries need egg and biscuit food during the moult and breeding season for extra protein.
Only red factor canaries need a colour-feeding seed mix. Yellow, green and white canaries don’t.
Birdsville Blends Finch and Canary is a fresh seed mix made by Birdsville in Alexandria, Sydney, and is the seed we recommend for pet canaries.

What Seed Do Canaries Eat?
Canaries eat mostly small grass seeds, and plain canary seed is the main one in any good mix.
The pet canary is a domesticated finch (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_canary), and plain canary seed comes from a grass called Phalaris canariensis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalaris_canariensis), grown mainly in Canada for birdseed.
Plain canary seed is low in fat and easy to digest, so it makes a safe everyday base for a canary’s diet. Canary seed alone is too limited, which is why quality canary seed mixes add hulled oats, white French millet, Japanese millet, panicum, rape, linseed and niger. Each brings a different balance of carbohydrate, protein and oil, and a varied bowl keeps your bird interested in eating.
Which Seed Mix Do We Recommend for Pet Canaries?
For most pet canaries, we recommend Birdsville Blends Finch and Canary (https://petsville.com.au/products/birdsville-blends-finch-canary-500g), a fresh seed mix made in our Alexandria store.
We mix it by hand at Birdsville in Alexandria, Sydney, in small batches. The blend starts with 70% canary seed, then adds hulled oats, several millets, panicum, canola, linseed, niger and sunflower kernels. We also include dried apple, carrot, spinach, parsley, pumpkin seed and tonic seed, so your canary gets a wider range of nutrients than a plain seed mix offers. It comes in 500g, 1kg and 2kg bags and also suits finches, budgies and small grass parrots. On a tighter budget, Basic Canary Mix (https://petsville.com.au/products/avigrain-seed-canary-mix-2kg) is a good everyday canary seed mix in a 2kg bag. Sprinkling Birdsville Blend Seed Enhancer (https://petsville.com.au/products/birdsville-blend-mixed-veg-seed-enhancer) over any seed adds dried vegetables.
How Do You Choose the Best Seed for Canaries?
Choose a canary seed mix that is mostly canary seed, smells fresh, has very little dust and suits your bird’s colour and stage of life.
Canary seed should be the first ingredient, at around 70% of the mix.
Look for clean, shiny seed with no musty smell, webbing or tiny moths.
A mix with some oily seeds such as rape, niger and linseed supports feather condition.
Freshly mixed seed beats seed that has sat in a packet for months.
Buy a colour-feeding mix only if you keep red factor canaries.
How Much Seed Does a Canary Need?
Most adult canaries eat about 1 to 2 teaspoons of seed a day.
Fill a canary’s seed dish so the bird always has food available. Canaries drop empty husks back into the bowl, so a dish can look full when there’s nothing left to eat. Blow or tip off the husks every day, and top up with fresh seed. Store seed in a sealed container somewhere cool and dry so it stays fresh.
What Else Should a Canary Eat Besides Seed?
Alongside seed, a canary needs fresh vegetables, a calcium source and extra protein at certain times of the year.
Vegetables and Greens
Offer a canary fresh vegetables every day or every second day. Good vegetables for canaries include broccoli, cucumber, endive, beans, snow peas, peas, corn and carrot. Remove leftovers after a few hours. Sprouted seed is another way to add fresh food, and our Best Bird Treats page (https://birdsville.net.au/bird-treats-tips-and-sprouted-mix/) shows how to make it.
Egg Food
Egg and biscuit food, such as Shep’s Egg & Biscuit (https://petsville.com.au/products/sheps-egg-biscuit-500g), gives canaries the extra protein they need during the moult and when raising chicks. A teaspoon a few times a week is plenty outside those times.
Calcium
Canaries need a cuttlebone (https://petsville.com.au/products/avi-one-cuttlebone-with-stainless-steel-clip) in the cage at all times for calcium, especially hens that are laying eggs. Our Calcium and Iodine Perch page (https://birdsville.net.au/calcium-iodine-perch/) covers another easy way to add minerals.
What Foods Are Toxic to Canaries?
Avocado, chocolate, onion, salty snacks, caffeine and alcohol are all harmful to canaries. If your canary stops eating, fluffs up or its droppings change, our Common Bird Illnesses page (https://birdsville.net.au/common-bird-illnesses/) explains what to watch for, and an avian vet should check the bird.
Canary Seed Frequently Asked Questions
Can a canary live on seed alone?
No. A canary fed only seed will miss out on vitamins, minerals and protein it needs to stay healthy. Seed should be the base of the diet, with fresh vegetables every day or two, a cuttlebone for calcium and egg food during the moult or breeding. A varied diet also keeps your canary singing.
Can canaries eat finch seed?
Yes, canaries and finches eat very similar small seeds, which is why many blends suit both. A canary mix usually has more canary seed and some oily seeds like rape and niger, while finch mixes lean more on millets. Our Birdsville Blends Finch and Canary is made to suit both birds well.
Do canaries need red factor seed?
Only red factor canaries need red factor seed. Red factor canaries rely on colouring agents in their food, mainly canthaxanthin, to keep their red or orange feathers bright, and it matters most during the moult. Yellow, green and white canaries don’t need red factor seed, and feeding it can change the colour of their feathers.
How often should I change my canary’s seed?
Top up your canary’s seed every day and blow away the empty husks so your bird can reach fresh seed. Empty and wash the dish completely once a week. Buy seed in amounts you’ll use within a couple of months, and keep it sealed, cool and dry so it doesn’t go stale.
Can canaries eat millet?
Yes, millet is a normal part of a canary’s diet. White French millet (https://petsville.com.au/products/avigrain-seed-french-white-millet-1kg) and Japanese millet are found in most canary mixes, and Millet Sprays (https://petsville.com.au/products/millet-sprays-mixed-100g) make a good treat or training reward. A Millet Spray Holder (https://petsville.com.au/products/jw-insight-feeder-millet-spray-holder) keeps sprays off the cage floor. Offer them a few times a week so your canary still eats its main mix.
Can canaries eat sunflower seeds?
Canaries can eat a few hulled sunflower kernels, but whole striped sunflower seeds are too big and too fatty for them. Small amounts of kernels, like those in Birdsville Blends Finch and Canary, are fine. Sunflower should never make up a large part of a canary’s diet, as too much fat can cause weight gain.
