Red siskin care comes down to a quality seed and crumble diet with plenty of niger seed, lots of greens, live food all year round, and a canary style cup nest for breeding. The red siskin, also called the black hooded red siskin or Venezuelan siskin, is a stunning little South American finch. Males are bright red with a black hood. It’s also famous as the bird used to create the red factor canary. This guide covers how to care for red siskins, from diet and breeding to housing and health, with a full shopping list of the supplies we recommend, delivered Australia-wide by Petsville.

Red Siskins in the Wild

Red siskins are native to Venezuela and Colombia, and a population was also discovered in Guyana in the 2000s. They live in open woodland and savannah. Red siskins are listed as endangered in the wild, mainly because of trapping and habitat loss, which makes captive breeding by aviculturists especially important.

Red Siskins and Red Factor Canaries

The red siskin is the bird that was crossed with domestic canaries in the early 20th century to create the red factor canary. Its genes are what allow red factor canaries to show red colouring when they’re colour fed. See our Red Factor Canaries page [Red Factor Canaries page link] to learn more.

Housing Red Siskins

Red siskins do well in a long cage or aviary with room to fly. Keep them in pairs, with perches of different thicknesses, a shallow bath, and separate dishes for seed, niger, crumble, grit, live food and water. Fresh water must be available at all times.

Seasonal tip: Red siskins come from warm parts of South America. In winter, keep them out of draughts, shelter outdoor aviaries from cold southerly winds, and add gentle heating in cold areas. In summer, give them shade, a bath, and Vetafarm Spark Liquid (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-spark-liquid-50ml) in the water on very hot days.

Red Siskin Diet

Red siskins need a three part seed and crumble diet with niger, plus greens, live food, egg and biscuit, grit, vitamins, calcium and fresh water every day.

Seed and Crumble

Seed is essential for red siskins. We recommend a three part diet, with each part doing a different job.

Basic Finch Mix (https://petsville.com.au/products/avigrain-seed-finch-blue-2kg): an everyday base of white French millet, canary seed, Japanese millet and panicum.

Birdsville Blends Finch & Canary (https://petsville.com.au/products/birdsville-blends-finch-canary-500g): our biggest selling finch blend. Mixed with the basic mix, it adds niger, hulled oats, linseed, vegetables, herbs and greens for extra variety and nutrition. Birdsville Blends are bagged fresh on site with a high turnover, so the seed never sits on a shelf, and buying from the people who mix it means better value.

Vetafarm Finch & Budgie Crumbles (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-finch-budgie-crumbles-450g): offered in a separate dish, or mixed with egg and biscuit, crumble gives balanced vitamins, minerals and protein that seed alone can’t.

Avoid many supermarket and chain store mixes, which use low quality grains and filler seed that affect the health and vitality of your birds.

Niger and Extra Seeds

Niger seed is very important for red siskins and shouldn’t be ignored. Ideally, offer it in a separate feeder. Niger is very hard to get in Australia at the moment, so we’re not selling it on its own, but it’s blended into Birdsville Blends Finch & Canary. If you can source extra niger, offer it on its own as well.

Red siskins also enjoy maw seed, hulled oats (https://petsville.com.au/products/avigrain-seed-hulled-oats-1kg) and crushed sunflower seed. Maw and sunflower are available in-store.

Millet Sprays

Fresh seed still on the stem. French white or panicum millet sprays are recommended. Buy them on Petsville (https://petsville.com.au/products/millet-sprays-mixed-100g).

Greens

Greens are important for red siskins. Offer seeding grasses, chickweed, Lebanese cucumber, dandelion, clover, silverbeet, the flowering heads of milk thistle, and endive. Clover is especially good for red siskins.

Live Food

Feed live food all year round, and increase it in the breeding season. Supply mealworms and fly pupae with some insectivore mix, such as Insectivore Rearing Mix (https://petsville.com.au/products/wombaroo-insectivore-rearing-mix-250g) or Vetafarm Insecta-Pro (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-insecta-pro-450g). Live food is available in-store at Birdsville.

Egg and Biscuit

An important source of protein that red siskins eat readily. It can be added to the live food. Try Shep’s Egg & Biscuit (https://petsville.com.au/products/sheps-egg-biscuit-500g).

Vitamins

Add vitamins through the water, such as Vetafarm Multivet (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-multivet-50ml). Vitamins on seed are lost when birds remove the husk.

Calcium and Vitamin D

All birds need a steady supply of calcium for strong bones, healthy feathers and good eggs. We recommend Vetafarm Calcivet (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-calcivet-50ml), a liquid calcium supplement with vitamin D3 that goes in the drinking water. It’s especially important for birds kept indoors or out of direct sunlight, because window glass blocks the UV light birds need to make their own vitamin D. Breeding hens need extra calcium to lay strong eggs.

Grit

Feed a good quality grit mix of charcoal, crushed cuttlebone, shell, baked egg shell and limestone, such as shell grit (https://petsville.com.au/products/shell-grit-5kg), in its own dish.

Fresh clover, a healthy occasional green for red siskins
Clover is great for red siskins on the odd occasion.

Breeding Red Siskins

The red siskin breeding season starts in September. This is the time to give them a more varied diet to kick their breeding instincts into gear.

Red siskins breed in canary cup nests about 40 mm across, available in-store. The hen builds the nest with a variety of materials, such as swamp grass, coconut fibre, cotton wool, feathers and soft bark (https://petsville.com.au/collections/bird-subsrate).

The hen lays around 3 bluish white eggs with red flecks, which hatch after about 13 days. The chicks usually leave the nest at around 2 weeks old, and the hen keeps feeding them for another 2 to 3 weeks while they learn to feed themselves. It’s essential to increase live food and egg and biscuit throughout breeding, especially while chicks are being fed. Vetafarm Breeding Aid (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-breeding-aid-100ml) on the seed also helps support fertility and chick growth.

Sexing Red Siskins

Adult red siskins are easy to sex. The male is a much brighter red, with a black hood, wings and tail. The hen is much duller, mostly grey with a light wash of red. Young birds look like hens until the males colour up.

Health and Parasite Control

Watch for fluffed up feathers, sitting still and inactive, a dirty vent, or a thin chest where the keel bone sticks out. A sick bird can go downhill within hours. Move it to a small, warm cage straight away, add Spark Liquid to its water, and see an avian vet. For more on finch health, see our Finch Care page (https://birdsville.net.au/pet-bird-advice-and-training/care-sheets/finch-care/).

Worm your red siskins every 3 months if they live outdoors, or every 6 months indoors, using Vetafarm Wormout Gel (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-wormout-gel-50ml). Spray birds, nests and the aviary with Avitrol Mite & Lice Spray (https://petsville.com.au/products/fidos-avitrol-bird-mite-and-lice-spray-125ml) every 3 months, avoiding the eyes. Keep new birds separate for 4 to 6 weeks before introducing them, and give them Spark Liquid in their water for the first few days after a move.

Cleaning

Daily: fresh water, seed and crumble in clean dishes, blow husks off the seed, and remove old live food and greens.
Weekly: clean the cage or aviary thoroughly.
Monthly: disinfect with Vetafarm Avicare (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-avicare-rtu-500ml), clean or replace perches, and clean out nests after the young have left.

Compatibility with Other Birds

Red siskins are generally peaceful with other gentle finches and canaries, but males can squabble in the breeding season, so give each pair space and its own nest site. They can crossbreed with canaries, so plan your aviary carefully if you don’t want hybrids. For more on mixing birds, see our Mixing Different Species of Bird page (https://birdsville.net.au/pet-bird-advice-and-training/mixing-different-species-of-bird/).
