Looking for hand raised budgies for sale in Sydney? Hand raised budgies are our biggest seller at Birdsville, 684 Botany Road, Alexandria NSW 2015, servicing the Eastern Suburbs and Inner South Sydney. Our hand raised babies are raised by hand by our breeders, so they’re tame, used to people and ready to bond with you from day one. We have hand raised budgies in a huge range of colours all year round, and we also sell lower priced aviary budgies for pairs and aviaries. Our team has been helping Sydney families choose and care for budgies since 1985.
What You Need to Know About Budgies
Budgies are small, social Australian parrots that usually live 7 to 10 years, and some reach 15 with great care. A single budgie needs a cage at least 50cm long, 30cm deep and 45cm high, with bar spacing of 1.2cm or less and a large front door to make taming easier. Feed a quality seed mix with a Birdsville Blend, pellets and fresh greens, with clean water every day, and handle your budgie daily to keep it tame. Our full How to Care for Budgies guide (https://birdsville.net.au/budgerigar-information/) covers the first 10 days at home, how to avoid a baby budgie unweaning, and spotting early signs of illness.

Why Choose a Hand Raised Budgie?
Our hand raised budgies are raised by hand from a young age, so they’re used to people and gentle handling before they ever reach the shop. That makes them the best choice if you want a tame, affectionate pet that will sit on your finger and bond with you quickly.
How Our Hand Raised Budgies Are Raised
- Raised by hand by our breeders, so they grow up comfortable around people
- Fully weaned before sale. We won’t sell a hand raised budgie until it has been eating on its own for at least a week.
- Flight feathers trimmed about a week before they arrive at Birdsville, for their safety in a busy shop. The feathers grow back at their next moult, usually within 4 to 6 months.
- Sent home on the same seed they’ve been eating with us, so there’s no sudden change of diet
What Makes Our Hand Raised Budgies Different
A hand raised budgie is already tame, so it’s ideal for a first pet, for families, and for anyone who wants a bird that talks and interacts. Because it has been handled every day from a young age, it steps onto your hand far more readily than a budgie raised in an aviary, and it bonds with you much faster. Every hand raised budgie also goes home with expert advice from our team, our full care guide, and a free visual health check lesson whenever you’d like one.
Remember that a hand raised budgie is tame, but not trained. Daily handling in the first few weeks is what turns a tame baby into a confident, bonded pet, and our care guide shows you how.
Why You Should Get a Budgie
- Friendly and fun: budgies are cheeky, playful little birds with big personalities.
- Great talkers: many budgies learn words and phrases, and a budgie holds the world record for the largest vocabulary of any bird. Males are usually the better talkers.
- Ideal for beginners: budgies are one of the easiest parrots to care for, which makes them a great first bird.
- Small space, small cost: a budgie needs far less room and money than a large parrot, a cat or a dog, so they suit apartments and smaller homes.
- Trainable: with patience, a budgie can learn to step up, play games and do tricks, much like a large parrot.
Why a Budgie Might Not Be Right for You
- They need daily attention: budgies are flock birds, and a single budgie gets lonely without daily time with you.
- They’re chatty: budgies chirp and chatter through the day, which most owners love but some find too much.
- Some mess: seed husks, feathers and grit end up around the cage, so expect to sweep regularly.
- A long commitment: with good care, a budgie can live 10 years or more.
- Dust and allergies: like all birds, budgies produce feather dust, which may bother people with allergies or asthma.
Should You Get One Budgie or Two?
If you want the tamest possible pet and can spend time with it every day, start with one young hand raised budgie. A single budgie bonds closely with you. If you’re out for long hours, two budgies keep each other company, though they’ll bond with each other more than with you. Many owners start with one, tame it, then add a second a few weeks later, and the second usually tames faster by copying the first.
We Also Sell Aviary Budgies
As well as hand raised babies, we sell lower priced aviary budgies. They haven’t been hand raised, so they’re more independent and less likely to sit on your finger straight away. They’re perfect for keeping as a pair or a small flock, for a backyard aviary, or for patient owners who are happy to tame a bird slowly over time.
Budgie Colours
We stock budgies in a huge range of colours, including greens, blues, pieds, yellows and whites, as well as show budgies from time to time. Colours change from week to week as new birds come in, so if you’re after a particular colour, let us know and we’ll keep an eye out for you.
Budgie Diet at a Glance
For an adult budgie, we recommend about 50% quality seed, 40% pellets or crumble and 10% fresh vegetables and greens. Our Basic Budgie Mix (https://petsville.com.au/products/avigrain-seed-budgie-blue-2kg) with Birdsville Blends Budgie Gourmet (https://petsville.com.au/products/birdsville-blends-budgie-500g) mixed through it makes a great base. Budgie Gourmet is our biggest selling blend, mixed and bagged fresh on site with herbs, beetroot, chillies, pumpkin, legumes, dried fruits and vegetables.
Never put a baby budgie onto pellets alone. Keep it on seed, with pellets such as Vetafarm Finch and Budgie Crumbles (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-finch-budgie-crumbles-450g) available alongside, and an extra bowl of seed on the cage floor. Add a cuttlebone, an iodine source and Vetafarm Multivet (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-multivet-50ml), plus Calcivet or Soluvite D for indoor budgies.
Sexing and Refund Policy
Budgies are usually sexed by the colour of the cere, the fleshy band above the beak. Adult males usually have a blue cere and adult females a brown one, while babies have softer pink, purple or whitish ceres that change as they mature. Some colours, such as lutino, pied and albino, are much harder to sex. Our budgies are not DNA sexed. We’re very accurate and happy to show you how we sex them, but young budgies can’t be sexed with 100% certainty, so we can’t offer a refund, credit or exchange if a budgie turns out to be the opposite sex.
Health Guarantee
All our animals come with a health guarantee.

Budgie Package Deals and In-Store Help
Our products are already competitively priced on their own, but buying your hand raised budgie together with its setup gets you an even bigger saving, and we regularly run budgie and cage specials. Our team will help you choose the right budgie, cage, seed, toys and supplements, and put the whole setup together for you. There’s far more in-store than we can list here, and you can browse food, toys and health care online at Petsville (https://petsville.com.au) too.
Taking Your New Budgie Home
Bring your budgie home in a secure, ventilated carry cage, and go straight home. Never leave a bird in a parked car, even for a few minutes, as it can overheat quickly. On hot days, travel in the cool of the morning, and keep the carrier out of direct sun. If you don’t have a carry cage, we sell them in-store (https://birdsville.net.au/carry-cages/).
At home, set the cage up before your budgie arrives, then leave it to settle for 48 hours before handling. Add Vetafarm Spark Liquid (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-spark-liquid-50ml) to the water for the first 10 days to help with the stress of the move. On day 10, worm your budgie and treat it for lice and mites. If you have other birds, keep your new budgie in quarantine for 4 to 6 weeks before they meet.
Breeding Budgies
Budgies breed readily when they’re healthy, well fed and given a nest box. A breeding pair needs a quality diet with extra protein, such as egg and biscuit, plenty of calcium and a nest box with suitable nesting material. Our team can help you choose a compatible pair and set up for breeding.
Hand Raised Budgies for Sale Sydney: Frequently Asked Questions
Do you sell hand raised budgies in Sydney?
Yes. Our hand raised budgies are raised by hand by our breeders, fully weaned and eating on their own for at least a week before sale, and they come with their flight feathers trimmed. They’re already used to people, which makes them the best choice for a tame pet that bonds with you quickly.
Do you have budgies for sale in Sydney all year round?
Yes. Birdsville has budgies in stock all year round at our Alexandria store, including tame hand raised budgies and lower priced budgies for pairs and aviaries. Our stock changes every week, so follow us on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for current photos, or call (02) 9669 1766 to ask about a particular colour.
What’s the difference between a hand raised and an aviary budgie?
A hand raised budgie has been handled by people from a young age, so it’s tame and ready to bond with you straight away. An aviary budgie hasn’t been hand raised, so it’s more independent and costs less. Aviary budgies suit pairs, backyard aviaries and patient owners happy to tame a bird slowly.
Should I get one budgie or two?
Get one young hand raised budgie if you want the tamest pet and can spend time with it every day. If you’re out for long hours, two budgies keep each other company, but they’ll bond with each other more than with you. Many owners start with one, then add a second a few weeks later.
How long do budgies live?
Most pet budgies live 7 to 10 years, and some reach 15 with excellent care. A quality seed and pellet diet, fresh greens, calcium, iodine, vitamins, regular worming and mite treatment, and plenty of daily attention all help your budgie live a long, healthy life. Poor quality seed is one of the most common reasons budgies don’t.
Can budgies talk?
Many budgies can talk, and a budgie holds the world record for the largest vocabulary of any bird. Males usually talk more than females, but every bird is different, and some never talk at all. Repeating words often in a clear, excited voice, and starting with a young hand raised budgie, gives you the best chance.
