Ruddy Finches in the Wild
Ruddy finches are native to Africa and have a wide distribution, across most of the continent south of the Sahara, from Senegal and Sudan south to South Africa. Like most finches, they’re found close to water, in bushy savannah and acacia scrub.
Ash’s Photos From Kenya and Tanzania
Birdsville owner Ash photographed the wild ruddy finches below on field trips to Kenya and Tanzania, including a pair in Kenya and male ruddy finches feeding alongside blue capped cordon bleus in Tanzania.
Sexing Ruddy Finches
Ruddy finches are sexually dimorphic, which makes adults easy to tell apart. The male is a much brighter, deeper red, while the hen is a dull earthy brown, with a little red near the beak and on the rump. Young birds can be difficult to sex until the first red feathers start coming through on the males.
Housing Ruddy Finches
Ruddy finches can be kept and bred in large cages or aviaries. A planted aviary suits them well. Provide perches of different thicknesses, a shallow bath, and separate dishes for seed, grit, live food and water.
Seasonal tip: Ruddy finches come from warm parts of Africa and feel the cold. In winter, keep them out of draughts, shelter outdoor aviaries from cold southerly winds, and add gentle heating in cold areas. Winter is also the time to give them a break from breeding. In summer, give them shade, a bath, and Vetafarm Spark Liquid (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-spark-liquid-50ml) in the water on very hot days.
Breeding Ruddy Finches
Ruddy finches can be bred in large cages or aviaries. In Australia, breeding them has become easier than with some species, because years of domestication have made them free breeders, which means they’ll breed any time of year. In their native lands, they can only breed in the wet season, because grass doesn’t grow without rain.
Here’s a tip from our team. Give your ruddy finches a break from breeding over winter. You’ll breed more birds successfully over the year, because they’ll be in better condition than birds left to breed all year long.
To start breeding, pair your birds up. Luckily, ruddy finches aren’t picky about choosing a partner. Always pick healthy birds in good condition.
Ruddy finches nest in woven wicker nests or nest boxes, both available in-store. Provide swamp grass and feathers for nest building (https://petsville.com.au/collections/bird-subsrate). You can leave the material anywhere in the enclosure, and they’ll find it. They’ll nest in different spots around the aviary, from up high to just a metre above the ground.
The hen lays 4 to 6 white eggs, which hatch after about 12 days. It’s very important to increase the amount of egg and biscuit and mealworms before the chicks hatch. The chicks leave the nest at around 2 and a half weeks, and the parents keep feeding them for about 3 weeks after that, because it takes young finches some time to learn to crack seed. Vetafarm Breeding Aid (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-breeding-aid-100ml) on the seed also helps support fertility and chick growth.
Once they’ve finished breeding, clear the old nest material out of the nests so they can start a fresh nest next time. This helps stop lice infestations and is more hygienic for your birds.
Ruddy Finch Diet
Ruddy finches need a quality finch seed mix, greens, live food, egg and biscuit, grit, vitamins, calcium and fresh drinking water every day.
Seed
We stress a good quality seed mix. Any successful breeder will agree that seed quality is of utmost importance if you want finches to thrive and breed. Our top pick is Birdsville Blends Finch & Canary (https://petsville.com.au/products/birdsville-blends-finch-canary-500g), our biggest selling finch blend. It’s bagged fresh on site with a high turnover, so the seed never sits on a shelf, and buying from the people who mix it means better value. Basic Finch Mix, also known as Finch Blue (https://petsville.com.au/products/avigrain-seed-finch-blue-2kg), is also a good choice, as it has a good percentage of canary seed. Seed from a general supermarket may look nicely packaged, but many chain store mixes use low quality grains and filler seed that affect the health and vitality of your birds.
Ruddy finches also like maw, which is poppy seed, available in-store.
Sprouted Seed
Wash sprouted seed thoroughly with Vetafarm Aviclens (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-aviclens-water-cleanser-100ml) to remove bacteria before feeding it to your finches.
Millet Sprays
Fresh millet still on the stem, in French white or panicum. Buy them on Petsville (https://petsville.com.au/products/millet-sprays-mixed-100g).
Greens
Ruddy finches enjoy seeding grasses. Make sure they haven’t been sprayed with pesticides. Endive and kale are also good greens.
Live Food
Live food, such as mealworms and fly pupae, plays an important role in the ruddy finch diet. Feed it with some insectivore mix, such as Insectivore Rearing Mix (https://petsville.com.au/products/wombaroo-insectivore-rearing-mix-250g) or Vetafarm Insecta-Pro (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-insecta-pro-450g). Live food is available in-store at Birdsville.
Egg and Biscuit
An important source of protein, especially when breeding. Try Shep’s Egg & Biscuit (https://petsville.com.au/products/sheps-egg-biscuit-500g).
Vitamins
Add vitamins to the drinking water, such as Vetafarm Multivet (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-multivet-50ml). Vitamins added to seed are wasted, because ruddy finches shell the husk and only eat the inside of the seed.
Calcium and Vitamin D
All birds need a steady supply of calcium for strong bones, healthy feathers and good eggs. We recommend Vetafarm Calcivet (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-calcivet-50ml), a liquid calcium supplement with vitamin D3 that goes in the drinking water. It’s especially important for birds kept indoors or out of direct sunlight, because window glass blocks the UV light birds need to make their own vitamin D. Breeding hens need extra calcium to lay strong eggs.
Grit
Fine shell grit with charcoal is very important as a source of calcium. Offer shell grit (https://petsville.com.au/products/shell-grit-5kg) in its own dish.
Health and Parasite Control
Watch for fluffed up feathers, sitting still and inactive, a dirty vent, or a thin chest where the keel bone sticks out. A sick finch can go downhill within hours. Move it to a small, warm cage straight away, add Spark Liquid to its water, and see an avian vet. For more on finch health, see our Finch Care page [Finch Care page link].
Worm your ruddy finches every 3 months if they live outdoors, or every 6 months indoors, using Vetafarm Wormout Gel (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-wormout-gel-50ml). Spray birds, nests and the aviary with Avitrol Mite & Lice Spray (https://petsville.com.au/products/fidos-avitrol-bird-mite-and-lice-spray-125ml) every 3 months, avoiding the eyes. Keep new birds separate for 4 to 6 weeks before introducing them, and give them Spark Liquid in their water for the first few days after a move.
Cleaning
Daily: fresh water and seed in clean dishes, blow husks off the seed, and remove old live food and greens.
Weekly: clean the cage or aviary thoroughly.
Monthly: disinfect with Vetafarm Avicare (https://petsville.com.au/products/vetafarm-avicare-rtu-500ml), clean or replace branches, and clear out old nest material after breeding.
Compatibility with Other Finches
Ruddy finches are peaceful and mix well with other small finches, especially in an African themed aviary with waxbills and cordon bleus. For more on mixing birds, see our Mixing Different Species of Bird page (https://birdsville.net.au/pet-bird-advice-and-training/mixing-different-species-of-bird/).
Ruddy Finch Frequently Asked Questions
What do ruddy finches eat?
A quality finch seed mix such as Birdsville Blends Finch & Canary or Basic Finch Mix, plus maw, sprouted seed, unsprayed seeding grasses and greens like endive and kale. Live food such as mealworms and fly pupae, plus egg and biscuit, is important, especially when breeding. Add grit, vitamins and calcium too.
How do you tell a male ruddy finch from a female?
Ruddy finches are easy to sex as adults. The male is a deep, bright red, while the hen is a dull earthy brown with a little red near the beak and on the rump. Young birds are harder to sex until the first red feathers start coming through on the males.
Is a ruddy finch the same as a red-billed firefinch?
Yes. Ruddy finch is the name Australian keepers use for the red-billed firefinch, Lagonosticta senegala. It’s also known as the African firefinch, common firefinch, fire finch or ruddie. All these names refer to the same small red African finch.
Do ruddy finches breed all year round?
In Australia, ruddy finches have become free breeders and will breed any time of year. Our team recommends giving them a break over winter, because birds in good condition breed more successfully over the year than birds left to breed nonstop.
Are ruddy finches easy to breed?
Yes. Ruddy finches aren’t picky about partners and breed well in large cages or aviaries. Give them wicker nests or nest boxes, swamp grass and feathers. The hen lays 4 to 6 white eggs, which hatch after about 12 days, and the parents feed the young for weeks afterwards.
Where do ruddy finches come from?
Ruddy finches are native to Africa, found across most of the continent south of the Sahara. They live in bushy savannah and acacia scrub, usually close to water. Birdsville owner Ash has photographed wild ruddy finches in Kenya and Tanzania.
