Central Bearded Dragons are Australia’s most popular pet reptile, known for their friendly, curious nature and manageable size (adults reach 40-60cm). They need a properly heated enclosure with a basking zone reaching 38-42°C, quality UVB lighting, and a diet that shifts from mostly insects as babies to mostly vegetables as adults. Why You Should Get a Bearded Dragon
Few reptiles offer the personality and interaction a bearded dragon does. They recognise their owners, tolerate regular handling well, and display genuinely engaging behaviours like arm-waving and head-bobbing. Beyond the dragon itself, their enclosures make for a genuine feature piece – with the right branches, rock formations and lighting, a bearded dragon habitat can look like a striking, natural display rather than just a pet cage, making it a real conversation piece in an apartment, home office or living room. They’re hardy, manageable in size, and consistently recommended as the best first reptile for new keepers – a genuinely rewarding pet for the right owner.
Why a Bearded Dragon Might Not Be Right for You
Bearded dragons are a real long-term commitment, often living 8-12 years or more, so this isn’t a pet to buy on a whim. Running a basking lamp and UVB light for 10-12 hours every day, all year round, adds a genuine ongoing cost to your power bill that many first-time owners don’t factor in before buying – it’s a running expense for the life of the dragon, not a one-off setup cost. You’ll also need a NSW licence and ongoing paperwork, a reasonably sized enclosure (120 x 60 x 60cm minimum for an adult), and recurring costs for UVB bulb replacement and fresh food. Feeding involves handling live insects daily or every second day, which isn’t for everyone, and you’ll need proper cover arranged for holidays rather than just topping up a bowl. If daily hands-on care, the ongoing running costs and a decade-plus commitment don’t suit your lifestyle right now, a bearded dragon may not be the right pet for you at this time.
A Great First Reptile
Bearded dragons are widely regarded as the ideal entry point into reptile keeping. These native Australian lizards are forgiving of minor husbandry mistakes while you learn, calm enough for confident handling from an early age, and don’t require the specialised humidity or dietary needs that make many other reptiles trickier for beginners. If you’ve been considering keeping a reptile for the first time, a bearded dragon is where most experienced keepers recommend starting.
Common Bearded Dragon Morphs
Central Bearded Dragons come in a range of colours and morphs beyond the classic wild-type look. We usually stock the Normal (natural) morph – rough, spiky scales in typical grey, yellow or brown tones – with other morphs coming in from time to time or available as a special order. These include Hypo (Hypomelanistic) dragons, with reduced dark pigmentation for brighter colouring and clear, unpigmented nails; Leatherback dragons, with smoother backs and fewer spikes for more vivid colouring; Translucent dragons, with black eyes and a slightly see-through quality to their scales; and Zero or Witblits dragons, which are patternless from birth in solid silver, white, grey or muted brown tones. We can also source red, citrus and yellow colour phase dragons on request. Silkbacks (completely scaleless dragons) are available by special order too, though we recommend them only for keepers with some existing reptile experience, due to their more sensitive heat and UV needs.
Do You Need a Licence to Keep a Bearded Dragon in NSW?
Yes. A NSW Native Animal Keeper Licence is required before you purchase a Central Bearded Dragon. Applications are completed online through Service NSW – there’s no need to visit an office in person. What Could Happen If You Keep One Without a Licence?
NSW takes native reptile compliance seriously. In one recent case, a Sydney man was fined $5,000 plus $3,000 in legal costs for illegally importing native reptiles and breaching his wildlife licence conditions under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, with animals seized as a result.
