They need a properly heated enclosure with a basking zone reaching 35-40°C, quality UVB lighting, and a varied omnivorous diet of vegetables, insects and prepared reptile food. They’re famously placid, rarely bite, and their signature blue tongue display is a defensive bluff rather than aggression, making them one of the most approachable reptiles you can own. Their manageable size and slow, deliberate movements also make them easy to observe and enjoy day to day.
Why a Blue Tongue Lizard Might Not Be Right for You
Blue tongues are a serious long-term commitment, often living 20 years or more, so this is closer to adopting a pet for life than a short-term novelty. You’ll need a NSW licence before purchase, a reasonably sized enclosure (120 x 60 x 60cm minimum for an adult), and ongoing running costs for basking and UVB lighting, bulb replacement and fresh food. Their varied diet takes more preparation than a simple pellet feed, and you’ll need reliable cover arranged for holidays. If a two-decade commitment and regular hands-on care don’t fit your circumstances right now, a blue tongue may not be the right pet for you at this time.
Great Pet for Apartment Living
Blue tongue lizards are well suited to apartments and smaller homes. They’re completely silent, don’t climb or attempt to escape the way some more active reptiles do, and produce no odour when their enclosure is kept clean. Their enclosure sits comfortably in a corner of a living room or study, and their calm, low-activity nature means they won’t disturb neighbours or housemates the way a barking or vocal pet might.
Common Blue Tongue Lizard Morphs
Blue tongues come in a range of colours and patterns beyond the classic wild-type look. We usually stock the Normal (wild-type) morph – a mix of grey, brown and tan tones with dark banding – with other morphs available from time to time or by special order. These include Melanistic individuals, striking almost jet-black in colour; Leucistic individuals, which are pure white while keeping normal dark eyes; Albino blue tongues, pale with faint stripes and red or cloudy eyes; and Axanthic individuals, missing the red and yellow pigments seen in normal colouring. Yes. A NSW Native Animal Keeper Licence is required before you purchase a Blue Tongue Lizard, arranged directly through Service NSW – applications are completed online, with phone support on 02 9585 6406 if you have trouble with the form. As a licensed reptile dealer, we require proof of a valid licence before selling you a lizard, and all our blue tongues are captive-bred and sold in accordance with the NSW Code of Practice for the Private Keeping of Reptiles.
