Carpet Pythons are a large python species, with adults reaching anywhere from 1.5 to 3 metres depending on individual and lineage, and living 20 to 30 years or more in captivity – a serious, decades-long commitment. They’re not considered a beginner reptile, and are best suited to keepers with some prior snake-keeping experience. A valid NSW Native Animal Keeper Licence is required before purchase. Being semi-arboreal, they need a taller enclosure than most other pet pythons, with climbing branches and elevated furnishings genuinely used rather than just decorative. Why a Carpet Python Might Not Be Right for You
Their size is the main consideration – an adult Carpet Python needs a genuinely large, tall enclosure, and handling a snake of this size safely requires more confidence and physical capability than a smaller python. This is very much a first-snake-graduate species rather than a true beginner one. You’ll need a valid NSW Native Animal Keeper Licence sorted before buying, along with the record-keeping obligations that come with it. Given a lifespan that can stretch past 30 years, this is a genuine lifetime commitment for many owners, so think carefully about long-term care arrangements, including holidays and what happens to the snake later in life. If you’re after something compact and easy to handle from day one, one of our smaller native pythons would suit you better.
Carpet Python Morphs

Licensing Requirements
A valid Native Animal Keeper Licence from Service NSW is required before purchasing a Carpet Python. Applications are lodged online via the Service NSW website, with phone support on 02 9585 6406 if needed. Keepers must also follow the NSW Code of Practice for the Private Keeping of Reptiles, covering enclosure, welfare and record-keeping standards. As a licensed reptile dealer, Birdsville requires proof of a valid licence before any sale proceeds – we don’t handle licence applications or paperwork on a customer’s behalf, so it’s best to have this sorted before visiting.

What Could Happen If You Keep One Without a Licence?
NSW enforces native reptile licensing seriously, with real financial consequences for getting caught without one. In one prosecuted case under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, a Sydney man was fined $5,000 and ordered to pay a further $3,000 in legal costs for keeping native blue-tongue and shingleback lizards he’d imported without a wildlife licence. Carpet Pythons sit under the same licensing framework, so the same risk applies – it’s a straightforward process to do properly, and a costly one to get caught skipping.
